OK, I will try to keep this short, and get to the point...but some background will be required.

<specs>
Tub is probably late 80s
When I remove the side panel, control unit says "Hydroquip" DS2 Designer Series, Model 5521B1-2C01C0
New conduit and 3-6 run from main panel with GFI 40 breaker

<background>
After moving it into position, wired it up according to how it was previously wired (purchased from inlaws, so replicated exactly what they had) - and filled it up. Left the breather on the filter open to try and prevent air lock.
After wiring complete, and tub full, hit the switch. Heard that pump was running, but when I hit the jets button - no jets. We assumed air lock, and took about 20 minutes to work it out (combination of loosening fitting after pump, and breather on filter - letting it spray water and air for a minute or so).
Jets and everything seemed to work fine.
Left it overnight.

<current situation>
Went out in the morning, and no heat. Not being an expert, took the side panel off to see if there were any obvious switches/misc we had missed. A red button labeled "overheat protection - press to reset" or something like that...got me thinking. Maybe in the air lock, the element overheated, and tripped this thing - so its not heating. I pushed the button in - and the GFI imediately tripped. Tried wiggling, pulling button back out, etc...no luck...every time trying to turn the GFI back on, it would trip.
I took the panel off and unplugged one of the leads from that "overheat protection button", and then tried the GFI - and the jets, etc came back on. Turned it back off, plugged the switch back in, tried the GFI and it tripped again. Unplugged the switch again, and turned the GFI back on. Left the tub running all day as I worked on other projects away from the house. When I got back in the evening, still no heating action. Turned the breaker off, and plugged the above switch back in. Now this really confuses me...I turned the breaker back on, and it started working. I was outside about 5 minutes later, and heard the tub turn off....checked it out, and the GFI was tripped again. Now I am back to where I was in the morning...unplug this switch, and the tub runs...still no heat - plug the switch back in, and GFI trips....not sure what I should try next.

Hopefully this post wasnt too long,...just trying to give all the details.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ben

Sounds like you had a bad heater element.

Anytime a spa gets moved, it almost always causes a problem like this.
