First I must say thanks to those regularly answer questions for all of us newbies out there.

Continuing along with my saga of my free tub I have someone coming this weekend to do the wiring to the pump which is external. The wiring will be for the pump iteslf and nothing else, the heater which will be added shortly is going to be gas and on a different circuit. The pump in a pentir challenger 230v 2.5hp. The problem I am having is that the previous owner left some of the wirin connected to the pump but I don't think it is right. He has a black going to L1 and a black going to L2 I know this is right. The neutral wire then goes to the ground lug on the back of the motor and there is no ground wiire in what is left of the whip. So does the neutral or the ground or both go to the gorund lug. IF not then where does the neutral go? The wiring diragram on the motor only shows L1 and L2.

It's a 230 volt motor.

Doesn't use a neutral.

Your third wire is normally ground.

Hmm that's the path we were on to that the white was not really a neutral. So L1 and L2 would go from the GFCI breaker to the motor, the ground would go from the ground bus in the subpanel to the ground lug on the motor and that's it. GFCI neutral lead to neutral in subpanel. Does the GFCI still work with out a neutral on the load side?

Yes it does work without neutral.
