Post subject: Questions about the ground wire connection

Greetings,
Tomorrow, I plan to buy and install the electric service for my spa. I am going to use 6/3 w/ground. I am going to install a 50A breaker (non-gfci) in my service panel in my house. From this breaker, I will run the wire to a 50A GFCI spa service panel. I understand that the 50A breaker in my house panel will connect to the red and black wire. The neutral, white, wire will connect to the ground bus in my service panel (I have a 3 wire service panel.) What do I do with the ground (green) wire? The other end of this wire will go to the spa GFCI panel. Do I need to connect the ground wire from my home service panel to the spa GFCI panel? I know that I have to use the ground wire from the GFCI to the spa, but I am not sure about the supply feeding the spa GFCI panel. Any advice or suggestion?

Thanks,
Stuart

Stuart,

That drawing you found is correct for hooking up your gfi subpanel. Always remember, after the GFI breaker, never tie the neutral to the ground, and never run the spa neutral to ground! In your subpanel that will contain the GFI breaker, you will be informed of a "bonding screw" which will bond the neutral bus to the panel. DO NOT USE THIS. If you only have one neutral/ground bus, you must install a second bus strip (available where you get your panel) as the ground bus, and make certain that the neutral bus that is already in the box is NOT bonded to the box. Use a multitester to confirm this before you power anything up. If this neutral is bonded to ground, or if your tub's neutral is bonded to ground, your GFI will either not work or it will burn up immediately. It's also a good idea, and often, code, to install a ground rod at the subpanel.

As the subject says, the spa has power and is now heating the water. I hooked up the electrical per the graphic listed in a previous post. I did not have any major problems, but I now have a better respect for those folks that have to work with 6 gauge wire. That stuff is a pain to work with. Anyway, I went to a local pool and spa store and they tested my water and sold me some chemicals and test strips. If the heating continues as it has, we should be in there by 10:00 PM tonight.

Take care and thanks for all the help..
