Okay, I have a 1996 CalSpa with a SC3000 Balboa pak and 2 4 horse 220v pumps and an external gas heater.

Item 1) Where is the best place to get replacement bulbs for the control panel?

Item 2) I decided to add an ozonator. I called CalSpa and Balboa and Balboa caled back first so I talked to them. I told them the spa pack I had and asked them whether I needed a 110v or 220v ozonator to plug into the 4 pin AMP plug on the control. I told him I had tried to check the outputs with a voltmeter but got no power. I said I had a green (ground), white, and black wire to the AMP plug so I assumed it was a 110v output. He said the colors don't matter (! ?) and looked it up. He said, yep, you need a 110v ozonator. So I ordered one. I asked him whether the J16 jumper should be ON or OFF to enable the ozonator. He said "swap it to wherever it's NOT right now". I thought that sounded odd, but figured he was the tech guy so he must be right (my jumper is/was ON without the ozonator).

In the meantime, CalSpa calls me back and I rehash the above part and CalSpa says that if it has black, white, and green, then it is a 110v output. They said that the jumper should be ON J16 to enable the O3. I told him that the jumper has been on for 8 years with no ozonator. He said "don't care, it needs to be ON to make the output work". I also asked him if the loose vinyl hose lying in the bottom of the cabinet with 2 check valves was for the ozonator. He said yes. He also said that the ozonator output will only work during the filter cycle, and would not be on during any manual pump operation.

This all sounds odd. I'm getting conflicting info.

Once again, the box is a Balboa SC3000.
220v pumps, pump1 is a 2 speed 4hp, pump 2 is a single speed 4hp. Pump 1 is the filter/heater/ozonator pump.

Question 1: For the ozonator output to function, jumper J16 is ON/OFF ???
Question 2: The ozonator output (once the jumper is set properly) will be on at WHAT TIMES ??? Will it be on during bathing (high speed manual operation) ??
Question 3: Do I need to sit 2 hours after powerup and use my voltmeter to check the output voltage or is it safe to go with the 110v claim by Balboa and CalSpa?
Question 4: Is there anything I can do to "make" the ozonator output turn on so I can check the voltage or do I need to wait for a timed filter cycle?

The tube for the ozonator to connect to doesn't feel like it pulls a vacuum unless the pump is on high speed. At high speed it pulls a good vacuum. At low speed I cannot detect any vacuum. Is this okay?

I know this is a bunch of muddles up questions, but my head is kind of muddled up...

Okay, I still need replacement bulbs for Balboa control panel.

Issue #2
Waited around for spa to go into "timed filtration mode" and with J16 jumper ON the 4 pin ozonator plug gets 120 volts. The ozonator plug stays hot whether we start the other pumps or anything else, as long as the filter cycle is still in effect.

I STILL need feedback on what you think about the suction line to the ozonator. On the filter cycle, the line has no discernable suction. On HIGH speed, it sucks like mad.

What are your thoughts on this part of the issue?

thanks

Sorry for the late response.

Normally, the ozonator tube may not have a lot of suction... but it does need to have SOME. Your ozonator should come with new check valve(s). In this situation, I'd pull the existing check valves out and see if the suction isn't being blocked or significantly decreased by them. If so, then I get rid of the two, and then install the new one(s) that come with the ozonator.

Just be sure the check valve is installed in the correct direction.

The new check valve was significantly more restrictive than the CalSpa check valves. I removed all but one of the Cal check valves (I kept the one that felt and looked the best). Plumbed it up with only the single CAL check valve.

Low speed has enough suction to stick the tube in a glass of water and it will pull water up about 5" high in the tube before it "stalls". On high, I believe it would pull a couple of feet of water uphill.. So, I convinced myself that a 5" pull of water was good enough even though I still can barely "feel" the suction if I hold the tube against skin for a few seconds and pull it loose.

Anyhow, my concern now is that the ozonator won't turn off.
Stays on all the time 24/7. Doesn't matter if the spa is being used in manual pump mode, whether the pump is on in a filter cycle, or whether it is sitting there with the pumps turned OFF, the ozonator stays ON.

It's definitely working cause when I pull the cover off I can smell it in the water. It's also noticeably reduced my chemical consumption.

But I'm pretty sure it isn't "good" for the ozonator to be on all the time and can't see how it could be helpful since there is no way for it to get in the water unless the pump is running and creating suction.

I figure a relay on the circuit board is sticking. Might just cheat and tap onto one leg of the low speed pump contactor...
