I'm glad to have found this forum and I hope you guys can give me some advice. I inherited (came with the house I bought) a Coleman Horizon 400
Spa circa '95. It has worked well for the past two years but started acting up about six months ago. The pump(s) started cycling high/low constantly which (to me) indicated a problem with either the controller or the pump bearings going out. So I turned off power and drained it -
I didn't have the time or money to troubleshoot it then.
Well I just filled it back up and turned it on and here is the diagnosis:
Neither of the pumps seem to be putting out much water flow and the heater doesn't seem to be working at all. The high/low speeds seem to be working but the amount of water flow is greatly reduced relative to what it was about a year ago. The water is about ambient temperature (80 degrees) with the set temp to 100. The display/controller does seem to be working correctly for what it's worth. My initial guess was that the
conroller was fried but it does seem to be acting normally. My setup runs off 220 VAC (two 60A breakers at the box) in case it's not obvious
from the pictures.
I just got access to the spa - my deck was built around it. Fortunately they left a little space in front of it to work on. So I took a bunch
of pictures documenting what I found. They are linked below - to me pictures tell the story better than I can...
I have a few questions if someone could help me out. I'm reasonably handy and have a good understanding of electronics (I'm an electrical
engineer BTW) so I think I can do whatever repair is necessary. Since I believe that at least one pump (maybe both) are toast and the heater
doesn't seem to be working (although I know that could be related to the reduced water flow) - it makes sense to me to just do a complete
overhaul and replace everything. Assuming that the spa is about 10 years old I think that it needs it. The shell is still in good shape and I
recently ordered a nice new cover for it.
So anyway - I have been reading about pre-built spa packs and think that may be the way I want to go. They seem to be minimal fuss and are reasonably priced. I just want to understand how it would work in my case. I have two 2-speed pumps in my spa (they look identical to me). Would the spa pack/controller do the work for both? If so, how does that work? The packs I've seen just come with the controller and a single pump. Maybe I'm missing something though. I actually would be ok with just one pump if that's the way it works. Also do you guys recommend the ozone unit? I guess that it helps with keeping the water clean but I'm not sure how important they really are.
So if you guys could point me in the right direction - for a good spa pack vendor and some possible part numbers I would really appreciated it.
Here are the pics of my current situation. I hope that I did the links right - it's my first time using a link like that.
If you need more info or more pics let me know, I'll be happy to provide what you need.
Great site - thanks in advance!
