I was given the shell for a Hot Springs Grandee, probably a 1988 or 1989. It had a control pack and heater, but no pumps. I've decided to get rid of the existing equipment and replace it with new hardware. Does anybody have any suggestions for a control pack and pump(s) to install in this thing? The original equipment had two pumps, one for the jets and one for circulation. Do I need to continue using two pumps in this manner? Is there really any significant benefit to using this setup? Thanks.

You sure it didn't have 3 pumps? (2 large 56 frame jet pumps, and one small circ pump used for heating and filtering only)

No reason you can't use a 2 speed, just be sure to cap off the circ. pump plumbing. Also, to ensure you'll get the benefit of the 2 moto-jets, don't change the jet pump configuration, they're just a couple of 1hp, 220v sta-rites (P2R iirc) Replumbing and adding 90's and 45's will inevitably reduce water flow, and those moto's require ALOT of water volume to work properly.

There are benefits to both systems (2 speed vs small circ pump), essentially, I could go either way. I prefer the small circ pump, only because if the spa is near a bedroom window, no one will hear it runnign during the night.

anway, personally, I don't think i'd pitch the controls, only because a new control system can be costly.

If all you need to do is throw a couple of pumps at it, it will save you lot's of cash and time.

Thanks, Swine. I'm pretty sure it was 1 circ pump and one jet pump, but I did get a copy of the owners manual from the manufacturer. I'll take another look at it. The spa does currently sit just outside my brother's bedroom window, and not far from my bedroom, so I'll probably replace the circulation pump. I tossed out the current control pack a long time ago, before I read in other posts how tough they are. Again, thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.

If it only had one pump, I don't think it was a Grandee. They all have 2 jet pumps + small circ pump.

If you can grab the serial number or post a pic, I'd be happy to provide pump spec's

Maybe its a Sovereign? There was an auction on ebay a few days ago about a seller that was parting out what he thought was a Grandee, in the end it had just one main 2hp pump which I won for about 10 dollars and the heater box with elements for $66, I gave up on the control panel when it went over $230, I have a 93 Sovereign I bought for $100 and have mostly had to do little to it except repair a few places in the floor and replace a heater, I suggest cruising ebay for people parting out old tubs.

Replace the components with with originals if possible. Plenty of us HotSpring people here to help you get the right parts and advice. Serial# tells every part you need for that spa.

I guess I should give you guys some more information on this spa. It looks like I still have the original heating unit and control unit. The insulation on the heater has been shredded a little by mice. Assuming it still works, is it possible to replace the insulation and continue to use this unit?

401418 isn't it. G-01418? Serial number will start with a "G." The heater insulation can be replaced. There's an exact replacement that fits the rectangle box perfectly. Or you can improvize. As long as the heater body is water tight......use it.
A parts list specific is not printed. However, our service manuals refer to parts used depending on serial number. It's a really good system......many manufacturers out there don't know what jets they used in a spa 8 months ago.
