Post subject: blue ridge circuit board issues (gatsby mfg) Posted: Tue Jun 07, 2005 3:13 pm |

HI,
I have a blue ridge #45, pack 9067T. I have a capacitor of some sort that blew out on the board, and am trying to replace it. I took it to the local jacuzzi dealer, but they could not identify the part to replace it. Anyone have a schematic of the board? It is the first capacitor off of where you hook up the circ pump. It is a red shaped disc, with the numbers 200 on top and P007 on bottom. It is in a location where there is a OV1 stamped on the board. We originally thought it was a varistor, but now the spa service dealer is saying it isn't. They admit they are no experts with electronics, and suggested just putting a jumper or something in there so you don't break the circuit. Any ideas? I still think it is a varistor of some sort since ov1 stands for overvoltage 1, correct?
Oh yeah, I guess I should explain what the problem is too. Every couple of days, the system will throw a PS2. If I power down the tub and bring it back up, I immediately get this code as well. Replaced the pressure switch too. This has to be the reason.
Thanks!

do NOT use a jumper to bypass this part until you are positive why it is there! Based on your descripion of the part, I would assume it to be a Varistor myself. You definentally do NOT want to jump out a varistor since doing so would short your power leads. To be sure, however, you would need to find a company that can cross-refrence the part. Now, if you can follow the circuit traces on the board, and if each lead goes to the power rails (120V and Neutral or 120V L1 and 120V L2) then yes, it is most likely a varistor. The purpose of a varistor is to just clamp any surges and prevent them going to your board. Your board would still be operational without it, however, you would loose your surge protection. If you do the check and are confident that it is indeed a varistor, then you can replace it with any varistor as long as the working voltage is at or slightly above your actual voltage. If that one is a varistor, it is likely that it's working voltage is 200V, based on the numbering.

Thanks for the information. the tub is a 220v 50a service, so I guess I would need to ensure that the varistor can handle that. I still have to investigate your suggestion of seeing what it is mapped out to. You indicated though that it merely provides surge surpression. Of course, I want and need that safety for the board, but I also want to fix the issue of the PS2 code being thrown every few days or when the tub is powered down. I was hoping that fixing this would resolve that issue as well. If it doesn't, I am back to square one as I have exhausted all other suggestions as what could be causing that code to be thrown.
thanks,
john
