Pull the box just outside of the equip. compartment. With thermostat knob down the black plate has four screws you "loosen" and the plate slips off. Now exposed are the components. This is where being a detective helps. Use you eyes, ears, and nose. Does anything look burnt? Smell crispy? You'll see a number of relays, four I think. One an interlock relay(your magnet latch on the door.). One for the jet pump, one for the heater, etc. They're usually numbered 1,2,3,4.
If you are not comfortable "ENERGIZING" the box to troubleshoot, stop right here and have someone/ a technician look at it.

Hello
I gurss the relays have what looks like a reset button on top, as it can be pushed down and it pops up, it has two. One has black burned smoke on it, so that must be the problem? I am ok with charging it up, can the relay be tested out of the box. Do you have one I can buy?

Thanks
Lrew

Turn it on, and see if the relay stays shut when it's not energized (test the coil voltage) . A little bit of scorching is normal wear and tear for a relay, and may not be indicitive of any type of failure.

Is it the same relay that will energize the jet pump?

The coil is part of the relay. It creates a magnetic feild that, when energized, pulls the contacter down to close the connection (close=on)

It's supposed to close when the coil is energized (down) and make contact. It should spring up when it's not energized, this is good. If it's springing up, then the jet cannot get power, unless there is something physically wrong with the relay. What we're trying to determine, is if it stays down when it's not energized. Have you taken continuity reading of the relay accross the points to determine that it's O/L when open?

Also, to test the relay, simply unplug the jet pump from the control box, and see if there's current at the coil (most Hot Spring spas used DC coil relays, unless it was made before 1988).

If the relay is closed and there is no current at the coil (either 12dc or 120v dc, depending on age) replace the relay. If there is current at the coil, and the coil is closed, the relay is working properly, assuming it springs up when it's not energized.

The coil wires are much smaller, and are at the middle of the relay, on the sides.

If you post a pic, it might make it a little easier.

Good luck, but try not to bite off more than you can chew- if you feel at all unsure or uncomofrtable, please call a qualified tech.

Good luck!

Swine's right. Is the relay always closed, energized or not? If so, replace the relay. If it only closes when energized, something's telling it to close...pump switch? I have almost all the parts in stock all the time. Need a schematic? I'll fax you one....need a complete serial number though. Parts sold at retail.

The part that has quite a bit of black smoke on it is a Joyclyn clark 677-36652-16, stamped May 1988 on it.

I plugged it in and it did the jets surge, the button on one relay stayed down all the time and came up when I unplugged it, the other relay just stayed up all the time.

Lew,

Is your spa plugged into an extension cord? If it's not, is the receptacle that the spa plugs into on a 15amp breaker or a 20amp?

Delab,

It has a 20 amp breaker in the garage, not a extension cord but it has a long cord, it is 110.
