I acquired a PDC Maui from the inlaws. My father in law had purchase it about 3 years ago from a friend. It has not moved in 3 years until last week when it was brought to my house. Its in great condition from what I can tell and was working fine when it was orignially unhoooked. I have replaced a few jets and the filter etc. What other things do I need to do? The tub is atleast 5 years old probably 7-8. I ahve no literature and am running out of places to look since no one seems to have anything older than 2 years.

Most modern "portable hot tubs" are just plug and play. When a new one is delivered, its postioned, wired-up, filled and "commissioned" (this is where the fitters balance the water). If you havent been shown how to do this, get your local pool supplies shop to come and do it. Most should do it cheaply or free on the agreement that you go back to them for servicing and chemicals.

If you already know what you are doing, I'd suggest running some pipe cleaner such as "swirl away" through the system, then drain and refill, balance the TA and CH, then the pH and then Chlorine or Bromine. Leave it for 24 hrs, re-test the water adjust as required, and you should be OK to hop in!

At some point you should just fill the thing with water and fire up the engines and see if things are running -- a little more doing and a little less theory. Otherwise, yes, I recently acquired a used spa too and bought new filters and performed a shock treatment and added and tested the chemicals (even bought the great digital tester, PoolDoc). Maybe check the spa cover to see that it is still in good shape - especially as we're on the heels of Winter now. Also, if you haven't filled the spa yet, think carefully (a) where precisely you want to put it, and (b) what positioning you might want to set for it -- you might find that if you turn it another 45 degrees (i.e., one corner turn) that the better or oft-preferred seating faces more aesthetically-pleasing views as opposed to say, looking at a wall. I'm about to do my first 3-month drain and I plan on turning a quarter-click due to just that reason.

Also, make sure you have an electrician install a proper dedicated GFI dedicated electrical outlet and circuit for it.

Other than that -- get in and EXPERIMENT!
