I have a magnetek motor 11.0/3.3 amp that is placed in a Coleman spa. The motor had quit working and I believe that it may have been the result of going back and forth between high speed and low speed. What is the capacitor looking item mounted to the motor and could this be the problem? Also, are there any other items to check and what checks/tests can be performed to verify the motor needs replaced? (Motor turns free and did not make noise prior to stopping. I have voltage coming from the control panel where the motor plugs into.)

Thanks for the forum!! Your asistance in my venture has been greatly appreciated. And if the motor needs replaced, I will gladly send the old one to you for all you do on the forum.

The capacitor is just that, a capacitor. It's there to create a split-phase condition to get the motor running. When the motor reaches 70% of it's operating speed, the capacitor is disengaged by the centrifigual switch you also see in the back of the motor. A bad capacitor will cause the motor to hum when trying to start. If the motor has no hum, the windings most likely opened and the motor will need to be replaced.
