Post subject: Leisure Bay Proshield wiring/heating problem
PostPosted: Fri Nov 26, 2004 3:09 pm
A few weeks ago everything in my spa stopped working. I replaced the fuse and found some burned through wires inside. I replaced the wires, but must have done something wrong with the rewiring, because after everything the heater doesn't want to come on. Everything else is working fine. I am wondering if I wired the relay going to the heater correctly.

It's a 220v heater, and it looks like one of the 110v loads pretty much goes straight to the contacter and then to the heater. The other incoming load goes to the icecube looking relay. The incoming neutral also goes to the opposite pole in this relay. Then both (when heater engaged I guess) seem to go to the same pole on the contactor that goes to the heater.

On the picture, on the top right of the spa pack is where the relay should be (where the unconnected wires are).

The way I think the 'icecube' relay was wired was that the front left and right is the big white wire and the big red wire that both go to the same pole of the heater contacter. The second left and right were empty. The third left and right where another big whire and red. The white coming from the incoming neutral and the red coming from one of the incoming loeads. The fourth (and last) left and right are smaller wires coming from elsewhere in the system.

Currently I know the relay is bad, and I need to get a new one. Just want to make sure I hook it up correctly so it doesn't burn out again right away.

I appreciate any help/suggestions you can give me!

File comment: Spa wiring from inside. Relay supposed to be on top right. Notice Red (Load) and White (Neutral) terminating at some pole of heater contactor. Other pole on that contactor is coming from the other Load.

Don't know if you've done anything with this control since you posted the question, but I'll tell you this thing is ripe for future failure all over the place.

All of your high current carrying connectors and wiring have been damaged with time and the relay problem is just the tip of the iceberg. In order to save this control (without a complete replacement), you'll need to replace every wire and connector that has the slightest amount of discoloration. The discoloration is caused by excess heat generated by a bad connection. Left un-repaired, each one of these will fail (burn up totally - taking the relay(s) and air switches with them) very soon.

If you've got some technical expertise in rewiring these high current connectors and getting them routed properly, then it's not really that difficult of a job. But if not then I recommend either a replacement or having an experienced friend or technician do it for you.

Regarding your replacment relay and wiring, the pics are fine but there's just not enough detail to give you a correct answer online. This is a situation where one really needs to be onsite to come up with a suitable solution.
