 Post subject: Blower Performance
PostPosted: Sun Feb 29, 2004 1:40 pm
Our old blower for an in-ground spa was past its time (a santanna 1.5 220v). We replaced it with a Waterways santanna 1.5 220 volt unit. We were suprised that the performance of the new unit was less than the old-hardly any bubbling action.

In looking more closely at the older unit we saw the phrase "hydro massage blower:-the model was 422002T.

Does that explain the performance difference? Or is there another problem we overlooked while installing? What would be the comparable unit?

Thanks

Kevin

Most of those external mounted blowers (including the ugly grey Santana ), have two discharge outlets. Be sure that the one you're not using is plugged properly, and not leaking air when it's running. Also, double check to be sure that the outlet you are using isn't leaking a lot of air around where the PVC joins into the blower housing.

Last thing..... I don't know how you wired it, but it's possible that it's running on 115, instead of 230.

If you switched the ground with either L1 or L2 connection to the motor, then the blower will be running on 115 volts instead of what you want.... which will make it sound kind of slow and sad.

Hope this helps. :P

One more thing Kevin... could be that the old check valve is stuck or not opening completely... If its' visible you might want to be sure its operating properly... unfortunately many ingound installer place the check valve close to the spa shell so you may not be able to access it. This is actually proper installation but it makes it hard if you have a problem. How long was your other blower inactive?

Thanks to both of the responses.

I checked the install for leaks-and that's not going to be the fix. I was careful to mark the wires when taking out the old unit-one white was and continues to be unconnected, so I don't think I rewired incorrectly. But I can try reversing the whites over the next few days to test that.

I also looked at the pool schematic-bare bones as it is- and can't see where the check valve is. The old blower was working until I replaced it, but it was making a racket and surging. The unit did a great job of pushing air-much better than now.

Is it possible that Santanna's (yes , it was grey/off white) hydro massage blower @ 1.5 pushed more air than the repalcement 1.5?

Thanks ( I live over in Pinellas)

Kevin

:D

The problem was electrical; but it still remains a bit of a mystery to me. I was careful to document the original wiring which had the blower's red & black lines joined together w/ one incoming white, while the second incoming white was deadheaded. This set-up gave a good result; but didn't for the new blower.

I rewired so the new blower's red went to one incoming white, while the blower's black went to the other incoming white, the grounds were joined of course. This gave the result we wanted.

Thanks

Kevin
