Post subject: Balboa LB102 says Sn or 5n (Lightning Strike)
PostPosted: Wed Dec 29, 2004 9:02 pm
It continually runs, doesn't create any heat, none of the buttons work.

Lightning had hit the ground nearby my house and messed up my fridge and my tub at the same time. I'm not sure if the control board is dead or not. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Chris

The SN means the temperature or high limit sensor is defective, however I doubt that's the real problem as the system should shut down in that condition, not run.

You need to get an insurance claim in on this thing if possible. A lightning strike on a system like this does unbelieveable damage as the millions of volts and extremely high current generated creates a very powerful magnetic wave that ends up passing thru any wire exposed to it, which in turn, causes that wire to generate it's own electricity.

eg; Move a magnet close to a wire and it generates electricty - same thing, but the magnetic field generated by the lightning strike is beyond anything we can generate mechanically.

You're going to need to replace the topside control, the high limit and temperature sensors, and the circuit board. Hopefully the pumps weren't affected, but there's no guarantee. In essence, replace the entire control system.

Wow, that's almost word for word what I didn't wanna hear. =)

I see that you guys have tech's in Atlanta, do you guys cover the Loganville area by chance? or should I call someone more local to come out and take a look.

Is there a way that I can test the components to determine what is good and what isn't? Do you know what system I would need that would be a direct replacement for this one?

The tub itself is a Leisure Bay Columbia, and the electronics are the Balboa LB102, with a date stamp of 12/01/97.

Thanks for your help!

Chris

I'm actually in Snellville, is that close enough?

You can reach me at the number below.

Yeah, I'd say that was close enough. =)

I've set up an account on this board before, but it won't send me my password. Sorry to keep posting as guest.

Sorry to dredge up a post from the dead.

I guess I should probably just replace the "topside control, the high limit and temperature sensors, and the circuit board" per your suggestion. Which spa pack would you recommend for my application? It's basically 175 gallons wired for 230v.

Thanks in advance!

Chris
