Post subject: Help! - spa filters for one minute then off for 5 min...then on...then off.......

I have a 4 year old Coleman Cooperage 106 with 2 pumps (2 speeds). The tub is in great shape and is very clean….always maintained and used maybe a few times a month. I have been noticing that Pump #1 (which is only 2 years old) has been coming on for "1 minute" (at low-cleaning/filtering speed) every 5 or so minutes. “filtering on for 1 minute…then off for 5 minutes………on for one minute…….then off for 5 minutes”. It does this for hours at a time. I assume that it stops at some point, but I usually go reset the tub when this happens.

**Also, not sure if this is related, but a month or so back, the spa was indicating overheat “OH” on the control panel and shutting the spa off. The spa water is not overheating and the pumps and flow were free of debris. I repositioned the sensor a bit and the spa has not gone into “OH” since.

The only thing I can think of is that it’s the Balboa circuit board (part #51666)? I thought maybe the motor was overheating after going through the repetitive on and off cycling……….causing it to overheat and turn off However, the spa is outside (in Northern MI) and goes through it’s 3 hour filter cycle fine (without overheating) after I’ve reset it. Maybe it is doing this during it’s scheduled daily 3 hours filtering cycle – not sure? I’d have to keep a watch on it and track the time.

Can anyone help me figure out why the spa is running on and off once in awhile (maybe once a week)? Dealer told me motor is overheating and then shutting down via overheat limiter - doesn't make sense to me....since it can go 3 hours non-stop when going through it's daily filtering.

Thank You.

It's possible that it is doing this out of freeze protection, possibly at the longest point between filter cycles (when the water in the pipes is the coldest) possibly when you repositioned your hi-limit it may have become exposed slightly to the air and therefore when the underside of the tub gets cold it detects this and has the pump kick on to filter the water to prevent freeze damage to the pipes....however this would only work for a few minutes if the sensor is slightly exposed.

Thank you very much for your input. The "on and off" problem was occurring before I repositioned the hi-limit sensor. In fact, I pretty much put the sensor in its normal place, just not cranked tight onto the heater element tube. This "on and off" goes on for hours……possibly longer. As an example, out of the blue, I heard it doing this late last night for an hour and had to go reset the tub. Maybe I should have let it until morning - to see if it was still occuring? Maybe if it does it for many days, it goes into “OH”?? Again, thanks for your input!!!

Could it be a bad sensor?...I hear of people replacing these all the time and them not being the solution.
