I have a LA Spas Model QU8000 (9/96) spa. The spa quit working a month ago. I tried resetting the GFCI on the spa but it would not reset. I then let the water out of the spa and it still would not reset and it never tripped the GFCI in the circuit breaker box. (I wasn’t sure if the GFCI was tripped in the spa but I could not reset or trip it by pushing the buttons). I replaced the GFCI in the spa but now it trips the GFCI in the circuit breaker box – you can see a small flash in the box and there is still no water in the tub (the GFCI in the spa is not tripping – the breaker in the box is acting like a short circuit – not a water issue). I had a repair technician from Sundance Spas look at it (the are no LA Spas dealers within 90 miles now) and he said everything is hooked up correctly and he even called out an electrician to verify. The repair guy said he knows nothing about LA Spas but he would guess the PC Board went bad. He unplugged everything from the board (pump, heater, blower, etc.) and it still tripped the main circuit. In fact, it broke the circuit breaker in the box and we had to replace that and it is still tripping. 3 people have double checked the main power lines into the hot tub and they are set up correctly.

Do you guys have anything to recommend? Is there a way to test the circuit board to see if it is the cause? I hate to get rid of the spa, it was working great and is in very good shape. I just went out one morning and it was dead.

Hi, if you "unplugged everything from the board (pump, heater, blower, etc.) and it still tripped the main circuit" it be very unlikely that it is a board issue. Is there a small transformer for the circuit board, if so disconnect it. Based on what you have done so far I would do the x-former check, then totally disconnect the spa from the incoming electric lines, insulate the wires and guard against a short and then try to reset the breaker. If the breaker trips with the spa totally disconnected you have a problem in the wire run from the breaker to the spa, possibly an nicked wire in the conduit.
