Hi,

Just bought a used thermo spa tub, 1997 model. Hooked everything up, but my 220 20 amp gfi breaker trips every 30 minutes or so. It also is warm to the touch. I have the tub wired to a box outside of the house (no breaker just a pull switch type) then from there wired to my panel. it's been running for a couple of hours now and the temp is up to 75, but I had to reset the breaker like 4 times already. I even turned the tub on full power, all jets let it run for about 15 20 minutes or so, and it's fine. But eventually it trips. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Try disconnecting the ozonator if you have one, otherwise it could be the heater as it heats up the coil internally separates and could be causing a fault. Or of course it could always just be weak breaker.

My gfci breaker is brand new. I just went out today and replaced the heater. So now I have a brand new heater as well. I don't I have an ozantor. And guess what, 20 minutes later breaker got warm and it tripped. I'm confused. Any more help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The only thing I can think of then is that you have the wrong gauge wire going either to the breaker or to the spa, remember that 6awg wire is always the reccomended use. Your spa may also require a 30 amp breaker, check you manual to see if you need to upgrade from the 20-amp to a 30 or even a 50.

Hi, thanks for all your help. That was exactly it. I don't get it. My manual, and even on the spa control panel it say 240 volt 20 amp !!! Well I called the previous owner and he said he had a 50 amp breaker for it. So I change the wire and breaker last night and it works great! I'm a little pissed at thermo spa for saying the requirements are 20 amps. My heater is a 5.5 kw heater, and according to my dad's hot tub book it says a 6 kw heater needs 60 amps. Again thanks for your help.
