Good day. What is the best tool to use for removing the insulating foam of a spa? I am rebuilding a Grecian Athena with leaks and need to remove and replace all of the foam.

A claw hammer, the claw side. It's not an easy proposition.

That simple, eh? I will get to work on Friday and begin the rebuild. Thank you for the prompt reply.

My experiance with acetone is that it isn't all that effective on this type of foam. It will destroy polystyrine (styrofoam) without flinching. Another bad idea is that acetone will dissolve the pvc that the jets and pipes are made from. Granted, it will take a while and chances are that the acetone will evaporate well before any severe damage takes place, but why risk it? Another drawback is that the acetone will actually cause the pvc to crack due to the cold. ESPECIALLY clear pvc, as a lot of jets are made from in older tubs. I suppose, by the time you were actually able to dissolve all that insulation with acetone, you will be floating so high that you wouldn't really care if the pvc all melted!

I had a similar experience. I finished removing the insulation. If you find the space limited for the swing with a hammer claw, try using an L shaped pry bar. That not only worked for the big chunks but also worked well to scrape off the rest. After that, a final cleaning with a fine wire brush attached to a drill works great. Learn from me, if your tub is fiberglass and you need to clean off some of that, remember that fiberglass particles can make you ITCH. Where long sleeves.
