Post subject: I'm Trying to Find a Leak - What's the Best Way to Conquer it?

Hello. I'm new here and to hot tubs too. I bought a used 10 year old Hot Springs Grandee. It leaks. I'm sure this is related to freezing but I took ownership of this recently and never saw it run. I figured it was worth the $100 I paid for it.

The location of the leak (when looking in the pump/heater compartment) is a PVC tube at the VERY lower left corner of the compartment. The PVC tube connects to another tube right at what I would call a pass-through wall.

I started to remove a few side wood pieces and then some foam and quickly decided I better check in here to see what my options were.

So, here's my questions:

1) If the PVC tubing connection isn't the problem and the problem is a leak on the other side of the wall, am I best off accessing this very low tube by putting the tub on its side and tracing the leak from the bottom of the tub?

2) Does the solution they sell on line for fix-a-leak work or is that stuff temporary? Does it plug things I don't want plugged like a pump/heater?

3) Does the foam remover solution I found selling on line work? Does a little of that solution go a long way or do I need multiple bottles?

Thanks!

Leaks are a pain. The leak sealer doesn't usually work, and even if it did in your application, I still wouldn't use it. Most of the time it will just cause more problems than it's worth. The foam remover solution is something I haven't ever run across, so I would really like the information you have on that (such as where you found it). The typical process of removing foam is digging, digging, digging! When finding the leak, you basically have to do what you got to do to trace the leak. I've had tubs on their sides many times repairing leaks, from below.

:D Start by filling the tub............then let it leak until it stops leaking. The leak will stop at the level where it cant leak anymore. This will help give you a good idea where to start looking.

Well, I feel pretty foolish. The "foam remover" I mentioned in my original post is for the foam that builds up on the water surface; not the foam that insulates the tub. I'm sure that'll give all you experienced folks a good chuckle! Go ahead, laugh at the new guy - I told you I was new.

Anywho, thanks for the responses. I believe I found the sorce of the leak. The tub is partially full up to one of the jets. In that case, can the service be done from that jet connection or do I have to approach it from the side/bottom of the tub?

Also, is there a source for plumbing diagrams out there?

Thx!

Well that's depends on where it's leaking. If you get lucky you can loosen the jet flange from inside of the spa. You can then replace the gasket through the jet hole. Then re-silicone the flange and re- tighten it. Look at it and see if it's cracked. If you remove the jet eyeball/internal you should be able to see the back of the body to see if it's cracked. If the jet body or the hoses connections to the jet body are damaged then you will need to get to it from both sides.
