Post subject: New pump has only two terminals--I have three wires to it

I replaced a bad pump a couple of years ago with an Advantage pump, but inadvertantly bought a 3 HP when I only needed a 1.5 HP, since I couldn't read the label until I removed the old pump. It worked fairly well, but would overheat and shut off every hour or two, then come back on when it cooled sufficiently. I figured it was too big for the existing plumbing and was being overworked, I'm not sure.

I just bought another Advantage pump, this time in 1.5 HP, 230V 2-speed, and says so on the label. My problem is that it only has two terminals (plus ground) but my wiring is three-wire (plus ground.) How can I use this pump? Thanks!

Every 2 speed pump I have ever run across needs to use 3 terminals. One for neutral (or return, if 240V) and one each for high speed and low speed. Double check the label, both on the pump, and in the rear cover where you access the wiring. One or both (if you have both) will show you where to attach the neutral (or return) and which of the other two go to the high and low operation. If you are still convinced that your pump doesn't have this, perhaps you could upload a picture of the wiring diagram and label from the pump, and your terminal connections.

There is no wiring diagram anywhere on the label or under the wiring cover. On the label, there is a small Volts sticker that says "230V only." Here are a few pics of it:

He said it sounded like they gave me a single-speed pump since there are only two terminals, and he was surprised that it was labeled as a two-speed.

I suppose now I'll have to wait for them to have this pump picked up, returned, and then a new one shipped. I thought I'd have my hot tub up and running last Wednesday night. I guess I was dreaming.

I would have to agree, you can see where the 3rd terminal would be, if it was 2 speed.
