Post subject: Cal Spa, water won't FLOW thru jets
PostPosted: Fri Feb 13, 2004 8:08 am
When I start up my tub from a water change, I never can get the jets to work. They sit there and "hum" at me. It may take two days of turning on and off the pump button before the jets will work. I don't know if there gets an air bubble blocked inside somewhere or what, but I am so tire going thru this that now when I need to do a water change I just let a hose run water in slowly, while another hose is letting water out of the opposite end. I make sure the water level stays to the top, but I am getting a constant water change out, but this takes all day long. I dread the thought of emptying out the tub, then refilling it and having it not start pumping water. What I do is this to empty and refill: Unplug the unit. Hook a hose to the hose bib and let water empty. Clean tub and filter. Disconnect hose & close hose bib. Fill with water to full level. Bleed air from filter equiptment module by opening the air relief plug. Tighten plug and hit the pump button. The pumps work, make noise, but no air is comming out of jets. I turn on and off and on and off. Re-bleed, turn on and off and on and off. Unplug whole unit and Go to bed frustrated. Try again the next day. What am I not doing? What can I do so I can just empty this tub and refill it normally? Please???

Sounds like a normal tub. What I do in this case is carefully vent the air with the pump turned on. It may take a minute to get all the air out, but it works.

Hi and thanx so much for your reply..
Do you mean to vent the air as in...turning on the pump with the relief valve off, as while I am bleeding it. Another words, turn on the pump while I am bleeding the filter. That is safe to do? Thanx~

Yes. Actually, it is a normal part of the business. But like anything else, one must use common sense and safety precautions when doing something like this so they don't get electrocuted.

Many many older CalSpas have this particular problem, and we get the calls on this at least 2-3 times a week (help I just drained my spa and now it won't pump water!) and it's always the same answer... with the pump on low speed, open the vent valves... etc.

Or, you could try it with the power turned off too. In this case you'll need to look directly for a vent valve thats located somewhere near the heater and/or the pump itself. I wouldn't be suprised if your spa pump is constructed so that it discharges sideways, (as in the diagram in that link), instead of vertically. This is usually where the whole problem starts, because with the discharge rotated sideways, the air that's trapped in the pump has no way to get out... (air likes to go up, not sideways). So, if there's a small vent valve on the top of the pump, then I'd open that until nothing but water comes out.

Use common sense with this and everything else here. Like, don't totally unscrew the vent valve with the pump running! Only open it just enough so that you can get the air out. Once the air disappears and nothing but water is coming thru, then you can tighten it down quickly. (As opposed to totally removing it and you've got a screaming miniature fire hydrant squirting all over your equipment!).

Good luck with this and let us know how it worked out.
