Post subject: Heater for a Jacuzzi Alexa spa
PostPosted: Wed Feb 02, 2005 11:23 pm
I have a 1.5 kw heater in this system.
My dilema - I had no heat - so I had an electrician friend come over and look. He stated the heating element was shot. I took out the element and went to a spa place to order a new heater element. the place ordered the wrong one. The one I received was a 6kw 240volt heating element. I call the place that ordered this heater for me and they say it isnt a problem, it will work if its wired like the 110 volt (1.5kw) was wired. So we wired the new 6kw heating element in along with a new high limit switch. Everything turned on beautifully. Only problem. NO HEAT.
My question.
What should I do? Can I substitute a 1.5kw heater for a 6kw heater? does the thermostat have anything to do with it?
Any help would be appreciated. Please email me at Lgotrocks@aol.com
Looking forward to hearing from someone who is knowledgeable in this subject, cause I sure aint.
Leo

check to see if your heater contactor is pulling in, and if it is, check to see if you have power at the element. If the contactor is not pulling in, check to see if you have a flow switch or sensor, and make sure that it operating properly. If contactor is pulled in, and you still have no power to the element, check for power going into the contactor. If you have power to the contactor, but not out, and it's pulled in, replace the contactor. If the contactor isn't pulled in, check to see if the coil on it is getting power. If so, replace the contactor. If not, check the flow switch. If all that is good, replace thermostat. If you have a circulation pump, make sure that is operating correctly, otherwise your flow switch (if you have one) won't work, or your heater overlimit switch will kick out.

Yes, you can substitute a 6KW 220V element for a 1.4KW 110V element.

It would help greatly if you could give us a make and model of the spa, and if you have digital control, what model that is as well. There are a lot of different designs out there, and what I typed for troubleshooting is a general guide. Sorry if it is confusing, I just don't have enough information to determine what system you have.
