Post subject: Leisure Bay- Proshield, No Heat
PostPosted: Sun Mar 28, 2004 11:57 am
The other day my Leisure Bay Spa quit heating. The GFIC tripped and the tub cooled off. I reset the breaker and everything came on fine as if it was heating. After about 1.5 hours no temp changes. I went down to the control box area and felt the heater tub. Cold. I also made note that the heater light was on at the control box and also at the remote control panel. The remote panel heating indicator light goes out if I turn it down to below the ambient temperature and comes back on when I turn it up. Also while adjusting the temp control I can hear the heater click on and off (with light on control box corresponding to the control switch indicating the heater is on or off. I have also checked the function of the pressure switch by disconnecting it from its plumbing connection. At loss of pressure the heater “clicks off” and the indicator light goes out. So my conclusion is that I believe my heater element went out on my spa. I have a Proshield control unit with a flow through type heater on the bottom of the control box. I have tested the heater element with an Ohms meter/multimeter. The voltage reading using the two terminal lugs reads 230v with power applied and heater indicating it’s on. After removing power the same test with an OHM meter results in a (OL) reading (on my meter this means no resistance). Upon removing the heater tube and the element from the tube and re-testing the element. I get the same readings using the two terminal lugs. But if I go below the screw portion of the lugs a test at the two ends of the element I get a reading of .005 Ohms. From what I have researched on the web this indicates that I have a bad element. Cause being that the point of the connection of the terminal lugs show a high amount of corrosion. I am correct in my trouble shooting procedures?

Yes you're correct. The fact that you had 230V across the terminals and it wasn't heating was really the last thing you needed to verify. The element should read anywhere between 9-15 ohms to be good...
