Post subject: Floating Thermal Blankets - do they help?

Hi all, has anyone tried these, and compared electricity costs with and without? Just curious if they make a difference for the ~$50 cost. I've read they can increase the effective R rating of the cover by 4? IE. my R14 cover would be more like R18 with the thermal blanket added??
Also, if most crud floats on the top of the water, would the blanket affect the filtering process by trapping stuff?
