Hi folks -

We have a HotSprings Prodigy model bought new in November '03 with the Freshwater III CD-type ozonator. Apparently it quit actually producing ozone shortly after or possibly before the warranty ran out. Hard to tell when it stopped since it keeps bublbing and we never had smelled the ozone odor some post say we should. We just feel it's the chief suspect in why the same chemical regimen we always followed stopped keeping our water clear.

Replacement units I've found on-line range from about $100 for a "JED 103 Corona Discharge Ozonator Kit" to $300 for the OEM Freshwater III. Obviously I wasn't t happy with how the OEM unit held up. Any reason not to go with the low $$ replacement?

I like cheap.
Typical life of an ozonator is about 3-6 years. Beware of CD ozonators that need 'chip' replacement every 6 months to a year though... it'd be cheaper in the long run to use an ozone bulb type unit - then throw it away and buy a new complete unit after it's lifespan.

So neither of you thinks there's a reason to stick with the expensive orginal equipment replacement unit. Good to know. I see from the link provided and other sources that there are many alternatives. But I didn't find any ads saying how often the chip would need replacing or other specs I might compare to make the choice. Can you recommend specific makes and models? Or if that's not appropriate, how to find more objective information on the various available uits than what their ad copy says?

Man we're talking about 99 bucks or less. You shouldn't agonize over a simple replacement solution like this.
