 Post subject: Gritty Residue
PostPosted: Sun Mar 07, 2004 10:01 am
I've had my tub for 6 yrs. I recently drained my tub because I was leaving for several weeks. When I returned, I cleaned it, put in a clean filter, refilled it and put all of the necessary chemicals in. All chemicals are testing good and the water is crystal clear, but suddenly there is a gritty residue on the surface of the tub, bromine dispenser and the thermometer. I put in some "stain and scale control" hoping that would fix the problem. It did not help. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. I've never had this problem before.

This could be just about anything. Apparently, when you drained and left it, there were solids left hanging onto the surface of the shell. By the time you returned, they dried and hardened.

What I would do is simply let it be, and hopefully with enough time and use, the residue will go away. Wouldn't hurt to have a rag handy when you're using it so you can help it along. Just don't use anything abrasive like a 3M 'green weenie'. (You know, one of those scratch pads used to clean tough stains on dishes and such).

But next time you drain it like this, it'll be a good idea to wash and wipe down the shell immediately after draining it - or even wipe it down before you drain, then rinse it out with a hose.

No magic answer here.

Thanks for your help. I'll let it go and see if it goes away. Either way I'll be back and let you know how it pans out. Thanks again.

The same thing just happend to me. It sat for a week or so and I hopped in the other night and the fiberglass feels like sand paper. Just wondering if you found out what it was.

Thank's, Tom

Same thing here. The entire inside shell feels like sandpaper. Any ideas?

This may spark some ideas or theories....

I've had only one tub (of many) that had this problem. The tub is an older Jacuzzi (circa 84) but I don't believe that to be a reason. There wasn't any problems when I filled it with hard water, but when I've used soft water, there would be a precipitate covering all the surfaces. What I would do to remove it is use a stiff sponge and just wipe down the surfaces in the tub when I got in, and it would be filtered out. It would return, however. At the time I used salt in my softener that had rust remover in it. When using a standard salt, I don't recall having any problems. The water chemistry was always correct and within tolerances.

Have any of you with this problem been using soft water to fill? What type of chemicals do you use? Perhaps we can find a common element that may be causing this problem.

I just wanted to add that my problem appeared when the tub was in use and filled, along with a fresh fill.
